Tub-to-shower conversion
Replace an underused bathtub with a shower designed around entry, drainage, cleaning, household needs and the existing bathroom footprint.
Decide whether conversion fits the household
A shower may be easier to enter and more useful for current routines, but removing a tub deserves a whole-home decision. Consider whether young children or future occupants may need a bathtub, whether another tub remains in the home and whether a low threshold—not merely a larger shower—is the main objective.
What the conversion can involve
- Removing the tub and surround to inspect walls and floor
- Adapting drain size or position and updating the mixing valve
- Building or installing a shower base with correct slope
- Waterproofing walls, corners, penetrations and threshold
- Adding panels or tile, niche, seating and grab-bar blocking
- Measuring and installing a curtain rod or glass enclosure
- Repairing adjacent flooring, trim and painted surfaces
A same-footprint conversion is not always simple. Drain, slab or framing conditions can affect feasibility and cost, and curbless designs may require more structural coordination.
Define the entry goal
Standard curb: contains water effectively but still requires a step.
Low threshold: reduces step height while retaining a small barrier.
Curbless: may support easier rolling access, but requires careful floor elevation, slope and water-control planning.
“Walk-in” does not necessarily mean wheelchair-accessible or compliant with a particular accessibility standard.
Plan for safe, comfortable use
Ask who will use the shower now and over the expected life of the remodel. A handheld shower, reachable controls, non-slip floor, proper lighting, reinforced grab-bar locations and a stable seat can be more useful than decorative extras. Individual mobility needs may warrant input from an occupational therapist or qualified accessibility professional.
