Shower remodeling
Plan beyond the visible tile: the shower pan, waterproofing, drain, plumbing, ventilation, enclosure and safe entry all affect performance.

A shower is a water-management system
A good-looking surround can still fail if the base, wall transitions, penetrations or curb are poorly detailed. Before choosing tile or wall panels, establish what will be removed, which waterproofing system will be used, how it connects to the drain and whether existing framing or subfloor conditions are sound.
Custom tile or manufactured wall system?
Custom tile offers broad layout and finish flexibility, niches and benches, but involves more installation steps, grout maintenance and workmanship variables. Manufactured panels or surrounds can reduce joints and installation time but may offer fewer sizes or design options. Neither category is automatically better; installation quality and suitability matter.
Useful shower features
- Handheld showerhead on an adjustable slide bar
- Controls reachable without standing under cold water
- Reinforcement for current or future grab bars
- Properly sloped niche shelves and shower floor
- Non-slip floor selection and comfortable threshold
- Ventilation sized and ducted appropriately
Ask before signing
- Is demolition to framing included?
- How is the waterproofing documented?
- Will the drain or valve move?
- Who measures and installs glass?
- Are niche, bench and blocking locations shown?
- How are damaged framing or subfloor priced?
- What must cure before the shower is used?
Do not cover suspected leakage with a surface-only update. The source and resulting damage should be assessed first.
When a shower-only project may not be enough
Expand the conversation to a full remodel when floor damage continues outside the shower, ventilation and electrical systems need meaningful changes, adjacent fixtures prevent a useful layout, or multiple surfaces and fixtures are near the end of service life. Conversely, keeping a functional vanity, toilet and floor can preserve budget when the shower is the only real problem.
